Variable cost refers to expenses that vary in direct proportion to the level of business activity. These costs are directly linked to the volume of goods handled or stored. Examples of variable costs in a warehouse setting include labour for order picking and packing, energy costs for equipment, transportation costs for moving goods, and fees associated with temporary or seasonal labour.
